Making Patients and Doctors Happier — The Potential of Patient-Reported Outcomes

Rotenstein LS, RS Huckman, and NW Wagle. 2017. "Making Patients and Doctors Happier - The Potential of Patient-Reported Outcomes". The New England Journal of Medicine. 377 (14): 1309-1312. LINK

You might find some new ideas here to be helpful in thinking and talking about measures of project success that have real meaning for patients and carers.

Take a read of this brief (and FREE) "Perspectives" article just published in the New England Journal of Medicine. This is often considered the most respected and influential medical journals worldwide.

Perhaps you will be inspired to influence your current partnerships in improvement and in research to add a greater patient perspective on outcomes?

Or maybe its value for you is in learning this language and strategy to become a more effective "change agent" for better care?

Patients will succeed in receiving better care when practitioners feel greater intrinsic reward for "helping, healing and offering hope". Reflecting that back to them when care is good is the best positive reinforcement I can imagine.

      Best wishes!

A great tweet seen lately about metrics

There are 6000 standards in healthcare

less than 5% are outcomes metrics

less than 3% are patient defined metrics

These figures were tweeted from a talk by @jeroentas @philips. He's the Chief Innovation Officer

Statistics paint a powerful message. We have a lot of work to do to change these metrics.
