When Patients and Their Families Feel Like Hostages to Health Care

A recent article describes a familiar situation: patients and families don't ask questions or state fears or concerns to their clinicians because they see them as experts, and because they don't want to alienate clinicians or be seen as "difficult." The examples in the article are stark, say the authors, but need to be stated if we're going to get to a better place. Three of the authors join the next WIHI (Thursday, November 21, 2-3pm ET) to discuss how a patient's loss of agency can feel similar to what happens to a hostage, and what we can do to transform how clinicians and patients relate to each other.
