The IAP2 Spectrum of Public Participation was introduced in 1999 and so much has changed since then. IAP2 are now conducting a global review to ensure that the Spectrum remains relevant and continues to inform public participation practices.

They're hosting a Thought Exchange to allow anyone with an interest in the Spectrum to provide input.

Participation is simple — there's a brief demographic survey, and then based on your personal experiences in public participation projects, you're invited to frame thoughts on:

      • what is working well with the Spectrum

      • what could be better

      • what solutions or improvements you can suggest

Each thought is limited to 150 characters, with an additional 150 characters available to comment on why that input is important. Share as many thoughts as you like. Note that your thoughts will be shared with others as you've entered them.

When you've finished entering your thoughts, you'll be offered a chance to rank to the thoughts of others. You can return to the platform at any time to resume.

      Thought Exchange link: https://www.iap2spectrum.com/

Participation takes approximately 10 minutes, longer if you have a lot to share!

Chris -Thanks for sharing this . I am happy to hear the framework is being reviewed. It was a useful tool in the early days of days of patient engagement (in health) , however much has changed and a rethink is warranted. Perhaps they will consider the recent WHO resolution on Social Participation in health which recognizes participation in a deeper way across all levels of the system -lays the foundation for a different starting point. link to WHO resolution
Chris-do you know what the timing is on this IAP2 initiative ? could make for a interesting PAN Conversation session…
My fellow P/CPs-let’s spread the word on this reach out to your networks -we need our voices heard

All and @Chris-Johnston Finally! I have long thought that the IAPs, while helpful, was getting out of date vis-a-vis patient/caregiver involvement. Is a spectrum still the way to think about this even? I will definitely take a look and urge as many of you with an interest in this to do so also.

Some years ago PAN looked at doing our own version but were not able to get funding for that project.

@Chris-Johnston definitely needs updating. Many patients spectrums have originated from the IAP2. Having different spectrums is one of the reasons that patient/caregiver partners are not included at all levels. Having levels gives options for when to engage and it’s difficult to get to the Empower level. I look forward to the possibility this will change.

@Donna-Rubenstein and all: I searched the website after finding the review but couldn't find any reference to the timing or when the consultation will close. So I emailed them to ask but haven't had a response as yet. If I hear back, I'll let you know.

They've had very little response so far - circa 160 thoughts by about 120 people, - so I'm hoping that means it's early days and there'll be time to circulate widely.

I'm going to share it with the Patient Voice Network in BC and hope they'll include it in their bulletin.

                Stunned by this response:

The Spectrum Survey remains live but it 'officially' closed on October 27th. The consulting group is taking this week to review the answers. You can likely have your contribution included up until tomorrow but unfortunately I can't guarantee it.
