Many people have experienced psychological trauma, as children, as adults, or in connection with healthcare experiences. This means that sometimes recounting experiences or contributing to research as a patient and public involvement partner or talking with healthcare professionals, can be distressing and can trigger memories from the original experience.

This guidance is intended for healthcare professionals, staff who work in patient experience roles, healthcare organisations, researchers and any others who interact with service users and their relatives who are giving insight and feedback through a patient and public involvement process. It offers guidance on how to work with patient and public involvement partners in a way that is both psychologically and trauma informed.

@Sandra-Ketler this is great information. I also think our PCP need to be trained on trauma informed care, they should do a ACE Report when they take on a new patient as part of the history.

@Sandra-Holdsworth that is a great thought. You can’t tell by looking at someone what their ACES score would be, and how this knowledge can help PP and providers in creating safe spaces.

@Sandra-Ketler As patients, I wonder if we should be aiming to develop a new questionnaire to help identify healthcare-associated trauma? While ACES scores are useful, a consistent scoring system to identify and assess trauma resulting from negative encounters with healthcare could be a powerful piece of evidence for healthcare improvement.
