PVN offered a number of PP an opportunity to take 13 courses from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. It was an eye-opening experience to dive into materials that are tried and true. Progressive, well thought out, and delivered by some amazing professionals and PP.

      1. Key takeaways:
Health care is a service, not a product, a service is co-produced. These modules reflect how important the relationship, and communication between professionals and patient is.
Every aspect of HC must reflect Patient-Centered care and adhere to the motto: “nothing about me without me”.
Patients are active agents in their health. Personalized care for an aging population with more chronic conditions will be needed.
Safe, effective, and timely patient care must be efficient & equitable. There is no one size that fits all! Technology will play a key part. Moving forward HC will be more specialized with more complicated and expensive procedures so communication will be even more important.
A team is a group of people that works together in a coordinated way, maximizing each team member’s strengths, to achieve a common goal. Could this be patients & professionals?
If they start with small changes and have a clear aim, there is the possibility of success.
      2. Any “aha” moments that stand out?
This course taught me there are changes needed in our HC system.
They showed us short engaging videos and gave us information that was, directly to the point, so we could dive deeply into so many facets of HC.
It was tough listening to how easily one drug infusion/one mistake can change your life. Human error is a fact. To err is human, to forgive is divine.
No one!!!!! Can be absolutely sure that a medication or procedure will work.
      3. How do you think the learning will support your current or future work?
As a PP I work to foster operational transparency at all levels. Leaders, staff, patients, and their families are all involved in the learning process.
Policy, protocol, or procedure that isn’t working needs PPs to speak up. This is the first step toward improving the system’s communication among multiple health care providers.
Storytelling, advocacy, and inquiry are ways to bring forward ideas for change. Promoting the social determinates of health reminds us improvement is a skill that requires work. This contributes to lower costs and an opportunity to ask any question.
Finally, create the right place and time to talk about anything real or sensitive.
