The Knowledge Translation Program at St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, is offering: Partners in Research (PiR). PiR is open to patients/family members/caregivers, and healthcare researchers.

Some of us have taken this course and found it to be one of the best for learning about patient-oriented research. It is a good foundation if you are thinking of getting involved as a partner on a research team.

PiR is a free course about patient-oriented research. PiR will focus on how families, caregivers, and healthcare researchers need to be involved in all aspects of research, to ensure research is relevant to the patients' identified needs. The goal is to improve patient outcomes. This course will help explain what patient-oriented research is, and how to do it.

Applications are currently being accepted for the spring and fall 2018 cohorts. More information can be found on our website: https://knowledgetranslation.net/capacity-building/our-courses/partners-research-pir

If you take the course, please provide comments below.

            Hi Allie,

This is the second time I applied for this course but again I will not be able to participate. I am finding that most of these courses are scheduled around the non-working patient advisor. All the sessions are mid day. Once again I have to back out and will hope they will consider doing an evening course or one on Wednesdays (my mid week break/day off)

            Disappointed : (

                HI Alies,

I have asked to be put on the list for the fall 2018 and let them know how involved I am as a patient advisor. I also let them know I take Wednesdays off to help manage my pain in hopes they will think about running a course on Wednesdays. I will keep hoping.

                      Congrats!! This is great.

The fall is the third time I have register for this course and because they run during days I have not been able to take it last fall and the spring one.

Maybe Annette with you and Alies involved you can suggest to have modules saved and ran some in evenings (hopefully wednesday )

Often I find organizers think all patient advisors are unable to work. I consider myself lucky, after a 3 year hiatus from work and weekly medical appointments finally I was able to return to work and successfully work with a chronic illness.

Any support is appreciated, would like to be able to take course.

                      Virginia

Great news that you are back at work, Virginia!

Your point is very important. I think everywhere patients are engaged, this is a struggle. I mean we can't even see our doctors on weekends and after hours easily.

We will keep raising it. Cheers! Alies

Kati, I hope you are an early bird! We definitely need to push for more flexibility and will. Alies

Hi Alies, I am definitely not an early bird, but i managed to get back to sleep after the class.

Virginia, a lot of,people that take the Partners in Research class work, there are not only patients, there are also researchers joining in- mind you they may be able to work it out in their schedule since this is work related activities. The challenges is to reach out everyone across Canada with different time zones and different personal schedules.

I applied mid-December 2017 for the October 2018 course and it was already full...

They said they would put me on a waiting list and let me know about the next course, but so far I haven't heard a peep 😞

                                              Hi Claudia

Partners in Research is a course funded by research dollars from the Ontario SPOR Support Unit. It was offered by St Michael's Hospital Li Ka Shing Institute

I have heard that it will be offered again across the country but I have no facts.
